ARCHAEOLOGISTS working on the battle of Fulford project have uncovered an ancient road through the ford from which Fulford gets its name.

Chas Jones, who has been leading the project, said the find was very exciting.

He said: “This is clearly the main road heading south from York.

“The alignment suggests that this was the original A19 linking Main St in Fulford to the route south through Deighton and Lincroft Farm."

Many pieces of iron and bits of bone have also been recovered during the dig.

“It will take a few months to analyse all of the material but there can be no doubt that this road was the axis for the battle fought at the ford in 1066,” he said.

York Outer MP Julian Sturdy visited the site on Sunday, with conducted walks being held around the battlefield on Saturday and Sunday.
