OVER 70,000 people headed to York Racecourse over the weekend to see racing, live music, and even a wedding proposal.

After the racing on Friday, Tom Jones performed to a sell-out crowd and then on Saturday, Scouting For Girls performed for racegoers.

In front of an estimated 35,000 people, Scouting for Girls hosted an on stage proposal in which a local man called Damian asked his shocked girlfriend Sarah to marry him.

The crowds cheered as she accepted, before the band played their best known hit She's So Lovely.

James Brennan, head of marketing for the racecourse, said some 250,000 racegoers had been to the races in York since the beginning of the year.

He said this had enabled them to offer high prize funds with £235,000 up for grabs on Saturday and four of the seven contests being won by people from Yorkshire.

He said: "For the people who came it was a memorable experience and I think they had a lot of fun. There was thrilling racing with popular horses winning or coming close."
