DAMON COULSON is the undisputed king of Fulford Golf Club.

The +2 handicapper has added to his club championship victory by claiming the matchplay championship at the prestigious Heslington Lane course.

With 16 qualifiers making it into the matchplay, Coulson received a first round bye before beating Nick Dyson, James Murch and Matt Kelly, in the final, to land a notable double.

With 55 category 1 players - those with handicaps of five or less - at the course, Coulson's achievements were no mean feat.

"It is not too common to do that, although I think Jamie Miller has done it a couple of times," he said. "Matchplay and strokeplay are completely different games. Anything can happen.

"It is great to have won both. It's another to add to the collection and everything is going well."

Coulson saw off Dyson 2&1 and Murch 5&4 before taking on Kelly in a 36-hole final which went right down to the final shots.

"It was a very up and down game, although I was never behind," Coulson added. "I was playing well and I was two up after the first 18. I got to three up at one point but, once we got down to 16, it went all square. Matt turned it round and was playing really well.

"It was probably the hardest game I have every played in matchplay. I finished with two birdies and won two up. I was delighted with the way I won it. I was under pressure on those last two holes and couldn't have responded any better."

Coulson, who narrowly missed out on making final qualifying for The Open championship last month, now goes into the English Amateur Championship at Alwoodley and Pannal at the end of the month in confident mood.

He said: "I am very happy with the results in the last couple of weeks. I have played really well and have been putting it together. It was frustrating at The Open qualifying at Moortown. I had two bogeys and 16 pars and, with a couple of birdies somewhere, I might have made it.

"But there were some positives. If I can only miss out (on qualifying) by a shot then when I am playing my best I should be fine."

Gary Pearce, Fulford general manager, added: "It is uncommon (to win the club championship and the matchplay) because we have such a wealth of good players. Matt Kelly is a reliable, strong and experienced player and is the sort of person that you have to beat.

"The next step for Damon is to transfer that home record into an away setting."
