POPPLETON remain at the top of division one of the IT Sports Mixed Tennis League.

The leaders beat York seconds comfortably 85-23, while Andy Cooke and partner Louise Marshman won their middle rubber 11-1 as York 1 enjoyed a 64-44 victory over Fulford.

Both Wigginton teams are now in the two relegation spots after the second team went down to Wetherby and the first team lost a competitive game at Dunnington, who were led by the unbeaten Alex McLean and Karen Mitchell.

David Lloyd stay at the summit of division two despite losing by two games to Poppleton, who were inspired by the unbeaten John Anderson and Hilary Spencer. Jez Catchpole and Denise Wilson won 25 games for York but they ended up on the losing side to a strong Rowntree Park side.

Nick Latchman and Louise Haritakis, meanwhile, led Heworth to a win against Fulford and moved their side out of the relegation zone.

Runaway leaders Bubwith added another two points to stay at the top of division three with a win against Sherburn, who found Mark Harris and Jill Rounce in unbeatable form winning 32 games.

Dunnington look favourites for the second promotion spot with a win at Stamford Bridge. Tim Hunt and Natalie Muir were unbeaten for Bridge. Dave Tomlinson and Kate Reader won 30 games for Cliffe in their win at Stillington as they battle to avoid relegation.

Wetherby Castlegarth are still top of division five with a win against Fulford and York stay in second place but were pushed all the way by visitors Cawood. Appleton Roebuck have joined the promotion battle after Mark Baxter and Sara Heron won 25 games in their victory at Wigginton, matched by Steve Temple and Amber Hickman.

Alne stay second in division six after Dave and Angie Pearson won 25 games in their victory at Copmanthorpe. They then drew with Wilberfoss. Dan Poole and Michelle Helm won 27 games for Wilberfoss to move them out of the relegation area with a much needed point.

Leaders New Earswick beat second placed Dunnington in division seven thanks to the unbeaten Steve Walker and Zoe Cook, who was making her seasonal debut.

David Lloyd took full advantage of Dunnington’s loss to move into the second promotion spot with Nick Thurlow and Maxine Gordon top scoring with 31 games. Sutton on Derwent moved into fourth, just one point behind Dunnington, with a win at Wheldrake led by the unbeaten James Sweeting and Olivia Turner.

New Earswick remain top of division nine but were beaten for the first time by Wilberfoss after top scorers John Latham and Andrea Webster, 11-1 winners in the last round, grabbed the points.

Paul Yoward and Carole Withers won a valuable 30 games for Rufforth to elevate their side to second place in their win at Dunnington.

Wilberfoss stay top of division ten despite going down to Appleton Roebuck as they were unable to beat Appleton’s Gary Cashmore and Kath Temple.
