THE WEATHER gods smiled on the Copmanthorpe Carnival this year, giving families a sunny and warm afternoon to sit outside and enjoy the party.

The 47th carnival took place on Saturday, and with a nod to the July 4 date, it took the USA as its theme.

The organising committee's Sarah Bennett said: "It was a bit rainy when we were setting up but later in the day it came out really warm and sunny, so we had a lovely afternoon weatherwise.

"Because of that, it was very busy and the stage show was particularly popular.

"Because of the weather, everybody could sit around outside, relax and enjoy the bands."

Attractions also included a donkey rides, fairground rides, stalls, a food court, a beer tent and tea tent, and children's games - as well as music from top local talent.

The carnival was established to raise funds to create a Recreation Centre for Copmanthorpe and the surrounding area. Now that the recreation centre is established, the money raised helps to maintain the centres sports fields, tennis and netball courts, bowling green, playground, club house and sports halls.

The centre also hosts the Scout HQ and a nursery.
