NEW council procedures designed to make sure all parties can influence decisions have been revealed.

The new Tory - Lib Dem coalition wants to set up new "cross-party policy and scrutiny committees" to replace the last administration's overview and scrutiny committees, and change the way Executive Members make decisions to be sure they consider other points of view.

Deputy leader Cllr Keith Aspden said: “The new committees will allow all councillors to debate and make recommendations on key issues before a final decision is taken. They will help to ensure that policy is developed in a more open way with greater cross-party involvement. It also means that the public will be able to contribute every step of the way”.

The Executive is also recommending an end to "officer in consultation" decisions which did not give people chance to see papers or have their say until after it was made.

A report on the potential new system will be discussed at to a Corporate and Scrutiny Management Policy and Scrutiny Committee on July 13, and could also go before the Audit and Governance Committee before a final decision.
