ENGINEERS have restored power to some homes in Yorkshire after lightning storms in the early hours.

Around 25,000 customers in Yorkshire, the North East and northern Lincolnshire now have electricity again after the power cuts.

The storm caused damage to Northern Powergrid's overhead electricity network leading to power cuts for around 27,000 customers across Yorkshire.

A spokeswoman said: “Our teams have worked since the early hours of this morning to restore power to the majority of our customers after lightning storms damaged our power network during the early hours of this morning.

The spokeswoman said that where possible engineers had diverted electricity supplies to get power for as many customers as possible while teams work to repair the storm damage.

She added: “We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused and thank our customers for their patience while we carry out the necessary repairs. We’d like to reassure them that our engineers are working hard to get the remaining 2,000 customers who are still without power back on as quickly as possible.”

Extra staff have been drafted in to contact centre to help customers with support and advice.
