TORRENTIAL rain is set to drench York and North Yorkshire tonight, with a risk of surface water flooding.

The Met Office has issued an early warning that 'isolated heavy, and possibly severe,' thunderstorms are expected to develop this evening across parts of England, which are likely to become more frequent later.

It says some torrential downpours are possible, leading to localised surface water flooding, with large hail and frequent lightning also possible hazards and the public should be aware there is a chance of some very localised significant disruption.

In York, glorious sunshine throughout today is ecpected to be followed by outbreaks of thundery rain moving in from the south in the late evening, with torrential downpours likely through the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow is set to be fine and sunny once the thundery rain has cleared away, and Sunday will be sunny again before more showers, possibly thundery, arrive later in the day.
