A PASSENGER has been arrested for allegedly threatening to blow up a train.

British Transport Police took the 42-year-old Leeds man into custody in connection with the Section 4 Public Order Act after officers were alerted to the claims at York railway station at 7.30pm on Thursday.

Despite the severity of the man's claims, the Transpennine Express service was not searched until it arrived at Liverpool Lime Street.

British Transport Police said this was because the incident was being treated as a public order incident.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “Our officers were called to York rail station on Thursday, 2 July, to reports of a man acting in a threatening and abusive manner on board a train.

“The call came into police shortly before 7.30pm.

“Officers met the Liverpool Lime Street bound service and arrested a 42-year-old man from Leeds on suspicion of a public order offence.

“He remains in police custody assisting officers with their inquiries.

"The train was searched on arrival at Liverpool Lime Street when it got there just after 10pm.

"A full search of the train was carried out.

"It was not dealt with in York as a credible threat and just a public order incident."
