A PAINTING by David Hockney sold for more than £3m at auction this week.
Arranged Felled Trees was expected to fetch between £1m and £2m ahead of the auction at Sothebys on Wednesday, but ended up selling for almost £3.4m.
The 75-year-old artist now lives mainly in Los Angeles, but has a long history with Bridlington, where he has returned several times a year to gain inspiration for his work.
Arranged Felled Trees was painted by the artist in 2008, and has been described as "a joyful example of David Hockney's legendary depictions of the bucolic landscape of East Yorkshire".
The piece has been exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and features two stacks of cut logs drawing the eye to a central tree stump.
