A CHARITY which flooded the streets of York with a festival of colour has been recognised by those who took part in the day.

York LGBT Pride is an organisation aiming to promote equality, diversity and awareness, and to defeat discrimination against members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community since 2011.

On June 20, York Pride attracted more than 4,000 people who spent the day celebrating the cause in the many participating local businesses.

The event's organisers have now been nominated for Best Community Project in the 2015 Community Pride Awards.

Greg Stephenson, the chairman of the charity, said: "The day may have been dampened by the weather, but we saw a great response from all over the city.

"A lot of different people attended, which shows how support for our cause goes much further than within the LGBT community.

“It was a day well spent for a lot of families, with culture and diversity at the centre. It has become a real city-wide effort.

“I am absolutely thrilled for our small group of volunteers to be nominated. We are just pleased that we can make a difference.”

Chris Grey, who nominated the charity, said: “They have created such a buzz around the city with their Raise Your Rainbow theme.

"I cannot remember a voluntary group or event ever getting so many different groups and businesses involved.

“It has been great to see the city welcome the theme and also York’s LGBT community sending out a clear message that York is a friendly place to be LGBT.

“Not only with the theme, but the event and parade themselves are a truly inclusive event where people can go to be themselves whether they be LGBT or not LGBT.

“This group have achieved so much in the last few years and thoroughly deserve this nomination.”

The awards are run in partnership with City of York Council and the primary sponsor is Benenden.

All Community Pride nominees must live in, or contribute to life in, the City of York Council area.

About three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October, when the winners will be revealed. You can make a nomination at yorkpress.co.uk/communitypride or fill in the form on this page.

Entries must be submitted by Friday, July 17.
