CITY of York Council has named its acting chief executive.

Steve Stewart will take over as the authority's head officer when Kersten England departs for City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council next month.

A panel comprising Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Labour elected members met on Friday morning to appoint Mr Stewart.

The vastly experienced local government officer led the creation of Northumberland County Council from seven pre-existing authorities and has been working with Sunderland City Council in recent months.

Cllr Keith Aspden, deputy leader and chairman of the panel, said: "Steve impressed us with his previous experience in leading the creation of Northumberland County Council from seven pre-existing councils.

"He also brings significant experience from across Yorkshire having held senior posts at Wakefield and Leeds councils.

"More recently, he has been working as a strategic advisor on transformation and devolution at Sunderland council.

"Following the panel today, I am also delighted that we have been able to offer Ian Floyd, director of Customer and Business Support Services, the role of deputy chief executive.”

Mr Stewart added: "It is an honour to be appointed acting chief executive of City of York Council and I know that I will be joining a strong team.

"I recognise that my priorities will include progressing the consultation on the new council plan and the management restructure that the Executive has initiated.

"As a resident of the city, I know how important it is to get services right for York.”
