A MOTHER and daughter survived uninjured when their car was hit by a tree during last night's gales in North Yorkshire.

Police said the accident happened at 8.40pm on an unclassified road just off the A64 between Rillington and Scampston, near Malton.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said a woman from the Malton area called to say a tree had fallen on her car, a Ford Fiesta, and blocked the road.

He said an ambulance was called and paramedics checked out the woman and her daughter, but they were both unharmed and did not need hospital treatment.

"The police officer who attended the accident said they were very lucky," he said.

A reader who took the photo above said: "The winds were absolutely howling last night."

York Press:

A number of other trees were blown down yesterday evening as winds reached gusts of 50mph or more, with the gales having a greater impact than in winter because trees are in leaf.

A tree came down onto the hard shoulder of the westbound A64 near Tadcaster at 9.20pm, partially obstructing the inside lane, and a woman rang police to say she had to swerve to avoid the branches.

Security fencing along the side of a building site in Top Lane, Copmanthorpe, was blown into the road at 8.30pm.

A large branch from a tree fell on to the B1222 at Naburn, near York, at 9.20pm and a tree was blown down in Otley Road, Killinghall, Harrogate, at 9pm.

A large tree was blown down into the road outside Queen Mary's School in Topcliffe, Thirsk, at 10.10pm, and a wall collapsed in Dean Lane, Scarborough at 10.30pm.

Another large tree blocked the road after falling in Seggans Lane, Great Ouseburn, near Boroughbridge, at 10.50pm.

More windy weather is expected late this afternoon, with gusts of more than 40 mph at teatime, before the weather quietens down overnight, with warmer, sunnier weather expected tomorrow and on Thursday.
