POLICE are clamping down on troublemaking football supporters travelling to overseas matches this week.

Currently, there are 16 people in North Yorkshire who have been issued Football Banning Orders, which means they have been banned from matches, including eight in York, four in Northallerton, three in Harrogate and one in Scarborough.

With the England team playing the Republic of Ireland in Dublin next Sunday, banned individuals must report to their local police station ahead of the match.

Detective Constable Kevan Howe said they must hand over their passports ahead of the match, on Tuesday or Wednesday this week and added: “All 16 individuals who are subject to Football Banning Orders in the North Yorkshire Police area have been notified in writing about these extra measures for the games against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia.

"They are known to pose a serious risk of causing trouble at England football matches, particularly at fixtures played overseas. Working alongside the United Kingdom Football Policing Unit, we will do everything in our power to enforce Football Banning Orders.”
