ANTI-AUSTERITY campaigners made their voices heard during a city centre protest.

Left wing demonstrators called for the Conservative Government to scrap their economic plans shortly after hearing them announced during the Queen's Speech.

The protestors, led by York People's Assembly, believe they cuts will hit the poorest the hardest over the next five years.

Christine Bailey, 47, from West York, said: "The Government's spending plans are not aligned with the things that are most important to me and a lot of money is likely to go on defence and running Trident.

"If we were to abolish Trident there will be more money for welfare that's being cut.

Chris Brace, of York People's Assembly, addressed the gathering.

He said: "There's no point pouring public money into the health service if it's just going to be syphoned off by private sectors.

"Don't be conned by how much money is being put in publicly if it's just being put into private coffers."

Leigh Wilkes, group member and President of York TUC, said: "Cameron, with his tiny majority, will find it hard to implement many of the policies his party proposes.

"People right across Europe are sick to death of austerity and its disastrous effects."
