HUNDREDS of pet owners took part in a fun dog show and walk to raise funds for a York baby with a rare and incurable condition.

The event was held at The Purple Partridge in Raskelf, near Easingwold, in aid of Blakes Genes – the fund set up to support Blake Knaggs, of Huntington, who is one of only 57 children worldwide to be diagnosed with Mucolipidosis II ML2 (MPS).

Blake’s parents, friends and relatives decided last year to launch a campaign to raise awareness of the illness and raise funds for research, which they hoped they might prolong his life but also help other children born with MPS.

Kelly Burley, who runs Pretty Paws Dog Grooming and Walking in Huntington with her husband Keith, organised the dog event, which raised £1,530.

She said the day started with a 30-minute dog walk followed by a fun dog show, raffle, face painting and a bouncy castle.

“Hundreds came to the event,” she said. “It was fantastic. We are so pleased how well the day went and want to thank everyone who came on the day and everyone who donated prizes.

“Derrings Kennels sponsored the event and two farmers, Graham and Ian, kindly let us use their paddocks for the dog show and fields for the dog walk too.

“The Purple Partridge Cafe let us use their facilities and sold fab food and ice creams.”

Winners in the dog show included best treat catcher, Zane, a Rottweiler owned by Dean Phillips; cutest puppy, Monty, a Miniature Schnauzer owned by Chole Sheldon; and best veteran and best in show, Dom, a Collie owned by Bob Holding.

Pru, a terrier cross owned by Mrs Bell, won waggiest tail; Lexi, a Jack Russell cross owned by Sarah Handley, won best fancy dress; and Eddie, a miniature schnauzer, and his owner Rob Sheldon, won the top title of best dog lookalike.
