SHE was born in York during the First World War – now Dolly Briggs has celebrated her 100th birthday with her friends and family at a sheltered housing scheme in her home city.

Dolly, a tenant at City of York Council’s Barstow House, was joined by pupils from nearby Scarcroft School at her celebrations.

She spoke of her pleasure at celebrating the big day at the housing scheme, where she said she had always been very happy and all the staff had been wonderful.

Louise Waltham, the council’s supported housing manager, said events at Barstow House were well-attended by Dolly, who would try her hand at games from dominoes to indoor curling or boccia bowls.

Dolly was born in James Street on May 24, 1915, but when her father returned from the First World War, the family moved to South Bank where he worked at the local flour mill, until it closed and they then moved to West Yorkshire.

She married Bert in 1938 and they moved to Driffield, where they ran a village store for seven years and had two sons, Roger and Nigel, before returning to York in 1960, where she worked for Marks & Spencer.

Louise Waltham, the council’s supported housing manager, said was Dolly was a popular and involved tenant, who was an inspiration to others to keep independent as far as possible.
