A CYCLIST is recovering in hospital after a morning rush hour crash which left her with a suspected broken pelvis.

The 35 year old woman was cycling on Fishergate, near the primary school and Mecca Bingo, when she was in a collision with a Vauxhall Astra at about 8.30am.

The roads and pavements were busy with families bringing children to the nearby Fishergate and St George's primary schools, and traffic delays soon built up in the area.

The cyclist was taken to hospital with a suspected broken pelvis, police confirmed.

Parent Robbie Fisher, who was bringing his child to school when he witnessed the crash, said: "It's really scary to when this sort of thing happens, I hope the person who got hit is OK "It just makes you think how important it is to have the 20 mile an hour zones at schools and neighbourhoods.''

Fishergate ward councillor Dave Taylor said the proximity of the primary schools was the reason that stretch of road became the first main arterial road in York to have a 20mph limit.

He added: "It just goes to show that accidents can happen," he added.

North Yorkshire Police have urged anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward and help their investigation by ringing 101, selecting option 2 and passing information to the Force Control Room.
