CROWDS of people have taken part in a sponsored walk in memory of a North Yorkshire mum who was killed by her violent partner.

Twenty-nine-year-old Rebecca Kowal was murdered by her partner Robert Byrom in 2008.

Following her death, her brother, Andrew Overton, has gone on to help raise thousands of pounds for domestic abuse charities with events across the region.

He has become the ambassador for the York-based domestic violence charity IDAS and on Saturday led Becca’s Walk – an event which saw more than 150 people walk 10km along York’s riverside in aid of the charity.

Andrew said: “It was fantastic to have such good support. Domestic violence is obviously a consideration in people’s minds and it’s more prevalent than people know or accept.

“It’s great everybody could come along and support the walk and to help in keeping Becca’s memory alive.”

He now plans to make Becca’s Walk an annual event in York.

Byrom was jailed for life in 2009 for Rebecca’s murder.

The mum-of-one from West Tanfield near Ripon had left him shortly before her death but had returned following the promise he would not do it again.

Andrew said he hoped the event would raise awareness and encourage people to try and help, should a friend or relative show signs of suffering domestic violence and become withdrawn.

The 10km walk started at Millennium Bridge, heading along the river down towards Water End in Clifton before looping back into town.

Sarah Hill, director at IDAS, said: “People can feel helpless when they are concerned about the relationship a family member or friend is in.

“I would always recommend them giving us a call.

“It’s absolutely fantastic Andrew is taking such a proactive approach to try and change things and raise awareness and vital funds.”
