OWNERS of dogs in North Yorkshire have been urged not to leave their animals locked in cars as the weather gets warmer.
The reminder comes after police in York were moments away from smashing the window of a car parked in the Clifton area of the city after spotting two dogs in distress.
The York North Safer Neighbourhood Team were on patrol when they saw the German Shepherds shut in the vehicle. A spokesman said the windows were slightly open, but this was not enough.
The spokesman said: "This did not allow the animals relief in the 16 degree heat. The dogs were left in excess of 40 minutes when the decision was made to break a window to allow them relief.
"The owner arrived just in time and the dogs were taken out of the car and given water. The owner was given strong words of advice."
Anyone who sees dogs in similar circumstances should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, and the RSPCA on 01904 653766.
