UP to 60,000 people are expected to attend the Harrogate Spring Flower Show as it marks the imminent 70th anniversary of VE Day.

The event, which runs at the Great Yorkshire Showground until Sunday and features about 1,000 exhibitors, includes plant displays based on Winston Churchill's victory speech "This is Your Hour," said spokeswoman Camilla Harrison.

"There is also a special Victory Allotment built by the Leeds and District Allotment Gardeners’ Federation, complete with Anderson shelter, dolly tubs, rabbit run and poultry ark."

She said there were many more large scale show gardens this year, with themes ranging from a York rooftop retreat to a "biophilic garden aimed at re-connecting us with our ancient ancestors."

There was also a series of practical "How2" demonstrations, including how to build a garden in just 60 minutes, and Britain’s biggest exhibition of flower arranging and floristry, including demonstrations by BBC Big Allotment judge Jonathan Moseley.

Other features include the north east heat of the World Association of Flower Arrangers competition and spectacular displays from over 100 leading plant nurseries, plus the annual spring daffodil show and the return of the northern tulip championships.
