NORMANDY veterans were invited to York’s historic Mansion House as part of the city’s St George’s Day celebrations.

The Lord Mayor, Cllr Ian Gillies, welcomed veterans to an annual luncheon event organised by the York Branch of the Normandy Veterans Association.

It was one of a number of St George’s Day events which will continue at the weekend when Cllr Gillies will attend a special commemorative event in St Helen’s Church.

The event on Saturday at 2pm will see a show of George and the Dragon with a mix of music, dancing and the chance for audience participation.

On Sunday afternoon, the Lord Mayor will take part in the annual St George’s Day parade which sees Scouts and Guides march through York city centre. The event will also celebrate the Scout and Guide movement as well as the efforts of young people in the groups across the city.

Cllr Gillies said: “It is pleasing to see York host so many events to celebrate an important day in the calendar. I look forward to attending a variety of events in the week to mark St George’s Day.”

On Sunday, to allow the parade to take place, the following streets will be closed to traffic between 1pm and 4pm at: Eye Of York, Tower Street, Clifford Street, Nessgate, High Ousegate, Parliament Street, St Sampson’s Square, Church Street, Davygate , St Helens Square, Blake Street, Duncombe Place, High Petergate, Minster Yard, Precentor’s Court and The Purey Cust.
