SIXTY York College students were honoured for achieving excellence at a 'Crafting Skills in Construction’ ceremony.

Students were recognised for their accomplishments in carpentry and joinery, brickwork, plastering, stonemasonry, professional and technical studies, electrical, painting and decorating and plumbing.

Among them, four received special medals for excellence.

Edward Williams gained a York Guild of Building Silver medal for Excellence in Joinery, while Robert Fountain bagged a bronze award for electronic installations.

The York Consortium for Conservation and Craftsmanship Award Trophy went to Laura Jeary, with Joseph Livsey picking up the Worshipful Company of Masons’ Prize.

Kevin Clancy, head of division for construction at York College, said: "On behalf of the whole college I congratulate the very talented award winners who are all future construction industry professionals.

"The college is also especially grateful to the many local construction industry sponsors for their continued support of these annual awards."

The ceremony, which saw awards sponsored by local businesses, also highlighted York College’s new £6m Construction Skills Centre, which will open on its Sim Balk Lane campus in September.

Mr Clancy said: "We are entering a very exciting period with the opening of our new purpose built Construction Skills Centre in September.

"At a time when there is real growth in the industry, the facility will benefit our students and the construction sector.

"Currently there is a high demand for construction skills and at York College we deliver high quality training across all the construction crafts.”
