A NORTH Yorkshireman who served as the county’s Lord Lieutenant for more than a decade has been honoured by city dignitaries in York.

Lord Crathorne became the Queen’s representative in North Yorkshire in 1999, and held the post of Lord Lieutenant until last year.

On Wednesday, he was granted the Honorary Freemanship of York, in recognition of his services to the city.

A special reception honoured Lord Crathorne’s work as Lord Lieutenant, as president and patron of numerous local organisations across the city as well as his support for civic events.

Current Lord Mayor Ian Gillies said: “I am delighted Lord Crathorne is receiving this honour which is richly deserved, and the fact all the previous Lord Mayors from 1999 are attending is testament to Lord Crathorne.”

The Freemanship of York is given to people who served the city with distinction, or who have notable links to the city.

Previous recipients have included Dr Richard Shepherd, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ron Cooke and Dame Janet Baker.
