THE Tour de Yorkshire trophy, which will be presented to the overall winner of the new race, is going to be on public display at venues around Ryedale this week.

Designed and crafted by the Yorkshire company Thomas Fattorini Ltd, the race’s bespoke trophy takes the shape of the famous letter Y for Yorkshire.

It will be presented to the winner of the first-ever Tour de Yorkshire, which takes place on May 1 to 3.

The race will be broadcast on ITV, Eurosport and to more than 100 countries around the world with viewers seeing the race winner lift the new trophy.

Councillor John Weighell, leader of North Yorkshire County Council, said: “We’re delighted people of all ages will have the opportunity to see this new trophy.

“The Tour de Yorkshire will be a fantastic event which builds on last year’s Tour de France Grand Depart in the county, and once again the benefits to North Yorkshire will be enormous, both in the immediate term and the longer term.

“We are working hard to make sure that everything is in place to make it a huge success and that as far as possible, disruption for everyone who needs to use our roads over the weekend of May 1 to 3 is kept to a minimum.

The Tour de Yorkshire Trophy will be on public display:

• This morning, Dalby Forest visitor centre

• This afternoon, Pickering railway station

• Friday, April 17, morning, Rosedale Coach House

• Friday, April 17, afternoon, North York Moors visitor centre, Danby

• Saturday, April, 18, morning, Grosmont station

• Saturday, April, 18, afternoon, North York Moors visitor centre, Danby.

With only three weeks to go before the event, work is well underway on the final preparations for the race weekend.

There will be rolling road closures in place before, during and immediately after the race has passed and these are expected to last for around an hour.

Some areas, including the stage starts and finishes, will have longer closures.

Full details of the roads affected are on the county council’s website northyorks.gov.uk/tour

•  Malton police are holding a free bike event in the town on Friday, April 24, from 2pm to 4pm.

The event, which will be held at the town’s library, will include security etching, basic bike checks by Northern Ride and a road safety event.

Everyone is welcome.
