SPORT is still proving to be a big part of Charlie and Doreen Arnett’s lives at they celebrate their diamond wedding.

These days the Acomb couple are keen members of York Indoor Bowling Club and have had representative and national success.

In the past, Mr Arnett has played cricket, football, golf and badminton – a sport his wife also enjoyed alongside netball.

Add to that, their daughter Karen is married to former York City goalkeeper Andy Leaning, while grandson Jack Leaning plays cricket for Yorkshire.

Mrs Leaning said: “They love to come and see Jack play. They have watched him since he was about 10 or 11.

“They love their indoor bowls and have won all kinds of stuff.”

Now aged 83 and 78 respectively, Mr and and Mrs Arnett met in Acomb in the early 1950s.

They were married at St Stephen’s Church, in Acomb, on April 2, 1955, and had their wedding reception at Mrs Arnett’s mother’s house.

Mrs Leaning got a photo from her parents’ wedding reprinted in colour to mark their 60th anniversary.

Mr Arnett was a railway wagon repairer in York and Mrs Arnett a housewife.

Karen is their only child and Jack their only grandson.

Mrs Leaning said: “They celebrated their anniversary in Llandudno – a place they love.

“They visit four or five times a year and are good friends with the people who run the hotel.”
