THIEVES broke into changing rooms at a York football field on Easter Sunday.

The locked door of the changing block in Sim Balk Lane, close to York College, was forced open between 10.15am and 12.15pm on Sunday, and thieves stole cash from the players’ bags.

North Yorkshire Police said they believe the main road next to the changing rooms would have been busy at this time.

They urged anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area to contact them.

Spring rolls in for the Ancient Society York Florists

York Press:

JOHN Galvin is hoping for a blooming good time when the Ancient Society of York Florists hosts its annual spring show on Sunday.

The event takes place in Askham Bryan College sports hall between 11am and 3pm with daffodils, tulips, auriculas, primulas and other spring flowers on display.

Show secretary and former Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Galvin said: "We are the oldest horticultural society in the world dating back to 1768.

"In the late 1800s, this was one of the premier shows in the country.

"There has been a show of one kind or another since 1768."

Tickets are £1 for adults and free for children. Parking is also free, with photography and bookstalls plus homemade refreshments available.

Cllr Galvin said: "That is an incentive in itself.

"We have an American lady whose sausage rolls are to die for."


Road to be closed for work

PART of Holtby Lane, off the A166, will be closed to traffic from next week.

City of York Council are carrying out resurfacing works in the village of Holtby from Thursday, April 16, over two days.

The road will be closed between 8am and 5pm, and diversions will be in place.


Teen quizzed over pavilion fire

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy is being questioned by police after a cricket pavilion was burned down.

The pavilion at Ashes Playing Fields, Howden, near Goole, was completely destroyed in the fire on Monday night, and Humberside Police and Humber Fire and Rescue said they believed the fire was started deliberately.

A local boy was brought in for questioning by Humberside Police on Wednesday.

Chief Inspector Kirsty Tock said: “I would like to thank the community and local press for their coverage of the fire and would now ask they allow the police to carry out a full investigation.”

Power tools shed theft

THIEVES stole power tools from a locked shed in a North Yorkshire village.

The attempted burglary happened at a property in Main Street in Keldholme, near Kirkbymoorside, overnight on Monday.

Lord Mayor to pitch up at charity sale

York Press:

THE Lord Mayor of York will be selling items at a car boot sale this weekend to raise money for charity.

Councillor Ian Gillies will be at Huntington Sports and Social Club on Sunday to help at a car boot sale in aid of this year’s civic charities, York Against Cancer and the York Teaching Hospital Charity, which try to improve patient care across the city.

While he won’t be selling any objects from the civic collection, there should be plenty of bargains on offer on the day.

The car boot sale is still open for residents to pitch up from 8am to sell their own items, at a cost of £5 for cars and £7 for vans, all of which will go to the civic charities.

The event is open to the public from 9am.

Councillor Gillies said: “This promises to be a great event in aid of this year’s civic charities.

“It is hoped this event will help add to the money raised for these great causes and I’m looking forward to meeting those who attend.”

There will also be refreshments for sale in the morning.


Dog is rescued from mud

FIREFIGHTERS rescued a 13-year-old collie that was trapped in mud.

The dog became stuck near Selby Canal, in Burn, and fire crews used an extension ladder to get across the mud and rescue the animal, which was given back to its owner unharmed.


Thieves steal quad bike

THIEVES stole a red Honda quad bike, registration PY02 KBZ, from a secure container at Walden Stubbs, in the Selby area, overnight on Saturday.

Horse group to meet

THE annual general meeting of the Selby District Rural Horse Watch will be held on Wednesday, April 15, at The Owl public house in Hambleton.

The guest speaker is Mary Weastell, chief executive of Selby District Council and assistant chief executive of North Yorkshire County Council. The meeting is open to all and starts at 7pm.


Treasure ahoy for youngsters at Bible club

York Press:

YOUNGSTERS are setting sail in search of treasure as part of Easter celebrations at York Baptist Church this week.

Up to 100 children aged five to 11, are expected to take part in the church’s Easter Holiday Bible club entitled The Great Treasure Hunt, which began yesterday. The church building in Priory Street has been transformed into a pirate ship for the free event.

Children have been enjoying songs, sketches and Bible stories as well as activities, crafts and quizzes.

The ship decor will remain in place for a family night on Friday and a “parents come too” service on Sunday before the usual Victorian interior returns.

Organiser John Green, who is playing the character of Trevor Island, said: “We have done a holiday club for the last 17 years, so we have gone through various themes during that time.

“The pirate theme was one we had not done before.

“Most of the children won’t attend our church on Sunday, but a few will come to our clubs during the week.”

CHILDREN and families went back in time this Easter to a find out how Richard III and the Plantagenets would have marked the holidays.

With events due to go on until April 12, the Yorkshire Museum has been holding special demonstrations and activities that would have taken place during the reign of Richard III, with a weekend of dancing and tournament training.

Young sword fighters were also seen taking to the Museum Gardens for some training.

Appeal to give town’s older generation a party

YOUNG people in Tadcaster are being urged to support a fundraising night for the older generation in the town.

Tadcaster Treat, which organises events for those aged over 70, has teamed up with Radio Mojo in order to stage a concert tomorrow, featuring music from right across the decades.

The event, at the Riley Smith Hall, will be aiming to raise cash to stage a big annual dinner next year.

Tadcaster Treat committee member Richard Sweeting said: “I’m appealing to all the younger generation to come and support this, so we can have a big party for the older people next year.”

Doors open at 7pm, with the bar running until 1am.

Royal honour for officer

A YORK-BORN probation officer has been presented with a national award by the Princess Royal.

James Bamford, who grew up in the city and attended English Martyrs Primary School and All Saints School and Sixth Form, is now a senior probation officer with Bristol, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire Community Rehabilitation Company.

He went to St James’s Palace in London to receive a prize for outstanding achievement, one of the highest accolades in the justice sector.


Charity shop loyalty deal

REGULAR customers at the charity shops run by York’s St Leonard’s Hospice are being offered a loyalty scheme to coincide with the hospice’s 30th anniversary this year.

Young musicians show

THE Ripon Young Musicians of the Year event will be launched with a concert by some of the best performers from previous competitions.

The event, at St John’s Church in Sharow, on May 9 has been organised to allow some of the area’s top young musicians to show their skills and to highlight the 2015 Ripon Young Musicians of the Year competition, which takes place in November.

Entry to the concert is £5 for adults – anyone aged 18 and under is given free entry.
