SPEEDING motorists are to be targeted by mobile electronic signs which detect how fast they're travelling.

Drivers across East Dunbartonshire will face the new measures from next month.

Eight signs will be moved around speeding hotspots in the area.

They will display a message telling drivers to "slow down" if they are speeding. If they are within the limit signs will read "thank you".

Council officers will compile data showing how many vehicles pass each sign and what speeds they clock up.

This information will be passed to the police, who could respond by sending out traffic patrols.

Councillor Duncan Cumming said: "Signs are solar-powered and have no ties to a power supply which means not only are they environmentally friendly but we can move them between problem sites quickly and easily."
