Almost 1000 P6 and P7 pupils competed in a series of mile long races at Nether Pollok playing fields near the Burrell.

Each cross country event had 240 entrants, depending on age and sex.

The first three across the line in each race were presented with gold, silver and bronze medals and there were also medals for the top schools.

Glasgow City Council primary physical education manager, Christine Watson, said: "It was very hectic because we had a lot of very active children in one place - but they absolutely loved it.

"It was very disappointing that it rained all morning but when a teacher asked if they still wanted to go ahead they all shouted 'yes'.

"The result was we had a lot of very dirty, very wet, but very happy children at the end of the event."
