A PROBE was continuing today after two open-cast mine workers were crushed to death when a dumper truck ran over their vehicle.

Tragedy struck at Scottish Coal's East Ayrshire mine in Dalmellington and now a major investigation is under way.

Workers Colin Ferguson and Brian French were in a Land Rover on the Pennyvenie site when they were run over by a 17ft-high lorry at around 1.30pm yesterday.

Both men died at the scene and dumper truck driver Alan Shannon was said to be devastated by the accident.

One possible theory is the Land Rover may have been too close to the dumper truck which would mean the driver would have been unable to see the smaller vehicle.

The site has been closed while health and safety officials carry out investigations as workers come to terms with the loss of their colleagues.

It is understood Mr Ferguson, 37, lived in nearby Patna before moving to Prestwick three years ago with his partner Suzanne Auld. It is thought the couple have three children, including an eight-month-old baby.

It is believed Mr French, 48, was originally from Durham and had settled north of the border for a number of years.

Police said investigations were continuing and a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Andrew Foster, managing director of Scottish Coal, said: "We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of the two men who tragically lost their lives."
