IT was a proud night at the Baftas for director Andrea Arnold for her Glasgow-based hit Red Road.

The former Top of the Pops dancer won The Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement by a British Director, Writer or Producer.

The movie, set in Glasgow's notorious high-rise flats was her debut feature-length film.

On receiving her award Andrea thanked the backers of the film and Glasgow for being a fantastic city.

Glasgow's James McAvoy, who played Amin's doctor in The Last King of Scotland, wasn't as lucky as he lost out to American star Alan Arkin for his role in Little Miss Sunshine.

Last night's glittering awards turned out to be a royal occasion with Baftas being handed out for portrayals of a king and queen.

Dame Helen Mirren scooped best actress for her role as the monarch in The Queen, while the best actor prize went to US star Forest Whitaker, 45, for his role as Ugandan leader Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

It was mission unaccomplished however, for James Bond. Casino Royale, the 21st film in the Bond franchise, only secured one of its nine film categories for best sound.

But there was a separate up-and-coming actress gong for Bond beauty Eva Green, 26, who took to the red carpet in a bizarre backcombed hair-do.

In other awards, British director Paul Greengrass, 51, took best director for United 93, while Jennifer Hudson, 25, the American Idol finalist, was awarded best supporting actress for her role in Dreamgirls.
