COMMUNITY groups in York took part in clean-up events this weekend.

Volunteers took part in 70 litter picks, tidying and painting sessions as part of City of York Council’s Big Spring Clean.

On Saturday, councillor Linsay Cunningham, cabinet member for health and community engagement, joined volunteers at the University of York.

She said: “Everybody who has already lent a hand to our Big Spring Clean, or who’s taking part this weekend, has earned huge thanks.

“We know that hundreds of people support their city in many ways every day, and that an event like this gives even more a chance to make a difference.”

Laura Jackson, York St John University’s Students Union President, said: “I’m pleased to see our students get involved to give something back to the place many of them call their second home.”

Other volunteers taking part included Brownie and Rainbow groups, St Nicholas Nature Reserve with learning disabled students and residents, residents in Poppleton and volunteer council staff.
