BOSSES at a thriving power station have thrown their weight behind an inspirational Community Pride award.

Drax, the owner and operator of Drax Power Station, is sponsoring the Teacher of the Year category which recognises someone who brings out the best in their pupils.

Nominations are now open and Peter Emery, group operations director of Drax, is urging people to get involved.

He said: “Teaching is one of those roles in society which really can make the difference and, as many people know, the impact of a truly inspirational and caring teacher stays with you for life.

“The challenges faced by teachers remain as tough as ever and those who show amazing dedication to realising the potential of children are absolutely deserving of our recognition.

“Drax is privileged to continue its sponsorship of the Teacher of the Year award, which we are sure will again reveal great stories from our local schools and colleges.”

Education is one of the key themes of Drax’s Caring For The Community philosophy, which sees the company support local schools and colleges in a number of ways.

These range from touring the power station to discovering how sustainable renewable electricity is made and lessons at the Skylark Centre situated in Drax Nature Reserve to support science and nature topics.

Drax also hosts an annual art competition for five to 18-year-olds to encourage creative skills and promote art within the curriculum, and shows support for North Yorkshire County Council’s road safety and travel awareness scheme by helping Year 5 pupils to develop ideas promoting safe behaviour when walking and cycling to and from school or travelling by car.

Last year’s winner, Debbie Feehan, of St Aelred’s Primary School, in Tang Hall, picked up the award after judges praised the enthusiasm she showed for music and the passion she had for sharing it with youngsters.

The Community Pride Awards are sponsored by Benenden and jointly run by The Press and City of York Council.

All nominees must live in, or contribute to life in, the City of York Council area.

About three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October.

You can make a nomination at yorkpress.co.uk/pride saying why you think your nominee deserves an award.

Entries can be submitted until Friday, July 17.
