FIREFIGHTERS in York helped raise money for a pair of charities with a car wash this weekend.

Volunteers from the day watch at the Kent Street fire station washed dozens of vehicles on Saturday - including a double decker bus - and collected donations from the public to raise funds for The Firefighters Charity and Scope.

Firefighter Terence Gregg said: "The reaction has been really good, but the first couple of hours were quiet - partly due to the weather. Then a lady put it up on Facebook and the station became mobbed quickly. Since then everyone has been over the moon with what we've done.

"We did between 30 and 40 cars, and a double decker tour bus - that was really not what we were expecting when we started in the morning, but they offered us £50 if we'd wash it. We should have raised a few hundred pounds at least, as people have been really generous."

The car wash was only interrupted by one call-out, but volunteers kept the event going while the on-duty crew answered the call.

The team want to thank Homecrafts DIY and Halfords for their support and donation of equipment for the car wash.
