A REVAMPED nature area at York’s largest primary school has been renamed as a tribute to its head teacher, who is retiring today.

Chris Wigley is standing down after 18 years at the helm of Clifton with Rawcliffe school, which caters for just under 600 pupils in Eastholme Drive.

During his time at the school he has overseen its move into a new £7 million building in 2011 after the merger of two separate schools - Rawcliffe Infants and Clifton Without Juniors.

As a tribute to Mr Wigley, a nature area on the school grounds has been given a make-over and has been named Wigley’s World in his honour.

The area contains a new outdoor learning centre for pupils, a bird hide, a new path and a 6ft Gruffalo.

Deputy head teacher Bev Wright praised Mr Wigley for his inspirational leadership, and the huge impact he has had upon the school.
