TWO people have been arrested following an assault which allegedly involved a hammer in the middle of a York road.

North Yorkshire Police were called to the corner of Bootham and Gillygate at about 4.45pm on Monday, where a member of the public reported a man had been hit with a hammer.

The incident was over before police arrived, but they later traced a 38-year-old man who had suffered a head injury, which was not believed to be serious.

One retailer, who asked not to be named, saw the events from his window.

He said: "It was over within about five minutes. I don't know what it is about this junction, but there's always something going off.

"I didn't see any weapons being used, there was just a lot of shouting at each other. One threw a bike into the middle of the road and the other pulled it out from the road."

The retailer said traffic was also disrupted while the incident took place, but it "seemed to be all mouth".

He said: "Cars were swerving around them and the lights changed twice at least while it was going on."

Further inquiries led to two people - a 37-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman - being arrested on suspicion of affray in connection with the incident, but police said despite initial reports there was no further indication a weapon had been used in the incident.

Both have been released on police bail until a later date.
