TWO sex offenders registered into the care of authorities in North Yorkshire are among hundreds missing around the UK, new figures have confirmed.

Freedom of Information Act requests were sent to every force around the UK by the Press Association, and found the whereabouts of 396 registered sex offenders were currently unknown.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed two registered offenders had gone missing - one had been missing since 2008 and the other since the end of last year.

Detective Superintendent Nigel Costello, head of the force’s protecting vulnerable persons unit, said: “The two convicted sex offenders highlighted in the report have both left the country, having failed to register with North Yorkshire Police – one is currently in China as he is a Chinese national, and the other we believe is in Cambodia. All measures and flags are in place to alert the relevant authorities.”

As of the end of March 2012, there were 623 registered sex offenders living in York and North Yorkshire, who were monitored by a number of agencies including police forces, social services and primary care trusts.
