A NEW Sainsbury's store has opened in York city-centre, creating 17 jobs.

Sainsbury's Local was officially opened on Thursday by the Lord Mayor of York Councillor Ian Gillies, Sheriff John Kenny, and the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu.

Also at the opening were representatives from the Alzheimer's Society and York Against Cancer, who were presented with cheques for £500 each by the store's manager Michelle Shields.

A cheque for £405 was also raised by the new store workers for the store’s Local Charity Partner, Alzheimer’s Society York.

Michelle said: "I am extremely proud to be opening our new store today.

"I would like to thank all the guests who joined us for the ribbon cutting, we hope to continue working closely with our Charity Partner of the Year- Alzheimer’s Society and the rest of the local community."

Jasmine Littler, dementia support worker from Alzheimer’s Society in York, said: "We are thrilled to have been announced the Local Charity Partner for the new York Piccadilly Local. On behalf of York Alzheimer’s Society, I would like to thank the store for having us today and for their efforts in fundraising for this great cause."
