THE York-based Ebor Academy Trust has been appointed to run a new primary school to be built at Staynor Hall in Selby.

The 210 place primary school, with nursery, will open as an academy in September 2016 and will be part of the same academy trust that runs Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy in Strensall and Haxby Road Primary Academy in York as well as, from the end of this month, Brotheron and Byram Primary Academy in West Yorkshire. From June 1, Ebor is also taking over Filey School.

Permission for 1,200 homes on the Staynor Hall development was granted in 2005. Since then 500 houses have since been completed and currently, primary school age children attend existing Selby schools, mainly Barwic Parade Community Primary, which is the nearest to the development.

Richard Ludlow, director of education with the Ebor Academy Trust, said that with school numbers rising and other significant Selby housing developments planned, and only limited potential for expanding existing school sites, full capacity was forecast to be reached quickly by education planners.

Ebor Academy Trust has now been approved to be sponsor of the new academy by the Department for Education. North Yorkshire County Council will provide the site and meet all costs in setting it up, with a contribution from housebuilders Persimmon.

Mr Ludlow said: “Our belief is that all children should be given the opportunity to achieve their best within a safe and caring school community.

“Our approach centres on early intervention in language learning, early introduction of specialist teachers into the classroom and tailoring programme and curriculum to make appropriate provision for individuals.”

Mr Ludlow said the new school would create a partnership with their primary academy at nearby Brotherton and Byram, which already works in collaboration with schools in the Selby area.

Work to prepare the site for the new school will start this month with building work due to start in June.
