FURIOUS neighbours are worried that planners may be about to approve a shared home plan for their street, despite scores of objections.

A developer has applied for permission to turn an empty three-bedroom house in Huntington Road into a five-bedroom House of Multiple Occupation.

Councillors are due to decide to application later this week, but neighbours who already saw off one application for the site are worried to see planners have recommended the scheme be approved.

The proposals would see a single storey extension built at the back of the house to turn it into a five-bedroom shared house with four parking spaces.

A planning statement written by agent Melissa Madge says the house would be for professional people who cannot afford to rent a whole property in York's expensive market.

But neighbours have spoken out against the plans with 120 letters of objection, and a 210-name petition citing road safety dangers.

Neighbour Dawn Conyers said she had other objectors would fight "to the bitter end" to stop the scheme which they believe would worsen parking problems which already plague neighbouring streets.

"They do not believe the parking spaces in the back garden would be used because the access is too narrow, meaning residents would park on the street and make dangerous obstructions for other people trying to reverse out of their drives, and for cyclists on the busy road.

They are also worried that approving the HMO plan for number 550 will only open the door for a bigger scheme in empty offices next door.

Dawn said: "We are not just unhappy about this, we are very distressed. It's completely ruined our peace of mind."

Objections have also come from Huntington Parish Council - which says it does not want to see a valuable family home disappear from the market - and MP Julian Sturdy.

But council planning officials have rejected the objections, saying highways specialists do not believe there will be any problems with on street parking.

They have also said that fears the house could eventually becomes a hostel are unfounded, as it would need further planning permission to be used as a hostel.

The application will be decided by City of York Council's area planning sub committee on Thursday, at 2pm.
