A NEW sports centre for York St John University and a new building for Carr Infant School are both likely to get the go ahead this week.

The university's sports centre plans will see a brick pavilion at the Haxby Road sports campus, which was bought from Nestle in 2012, demolished and replaced with the brand new larger facility.

The £3.8 million project is part of a bigger £7 million plan by the university to build a student and community sports park, and would bring a new sports hall, with badminton and basketball courts, viewing decks, and changing rooms to the Mille Crux Haxby Road site.

On Thursday, the plans will go before the City of York Council's planning sub-committee, and planning department staff have already recommended that the scheme gets its approval.

The officials have said that while neighbours are worried about the extra noise, that is a management issue and should not have any bearing on this application.

The scheme also has the support of Nestle Rowntrees RUFC, Rowntrees and Huntington Cricket Club, York St John Students Union, British Heart Foundation, York City Football Club and York City Football Club Foundation who all say it will help attract people into sport.

At the same meeting, planners have advised the councillors to approve plans for a replacement building for Carr Infant School in Acomb.

The application is for a new two-storey building, on a car park and play area south of the current building. The present prefab buildings would then be demolished and the land converted into play area.

The report to the committee adds: "The present physical condition of the school is poor and the site layout is difficult to manage with a joint site with Carr Junior School and a number of different access points."

The work is being undertaken under the Government's Priority Schools Building Programme.
