LEITH twins The Proclaimers will back up Monday’s release of their tenth studio album, Let’s Hear It For The Dogs, with an autumn tour.

Among the 26 dates will be Hull City Hall on October 23 and York Barbican on October 25, following a summer of festival appearances.

Led off by the single You Built Me Up, the album was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales and produced by Dave Eringa, who worked with The Who on their 50th anniversary single, Be Lucky, and with Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey on last year’s album Going Back Home.

“It was a joy working with Dave,” says The Proclaimers’ Craig Reid. “He understood what the songs were about and let the band describe them; he’s also one of the funniest people we’ve ever met.”

Brother Charlie adds: “We had loved the work he’d done with the Manics and thought the Johnson & Daltrey record was brilliantly produced. The recording was a great experience; everything went more smoothly than any other we’ve made. It was great to be back at Rockfield. The band all played beautifully and we’re really proud of the album.”

Eringa enjoyed the experience too. “I knew when I produced The Proclaimers that the songs would be great but even then I was shocked by the sheer quality both lyrically and musically of the material and the breadth of styles they covered,” he says. “The band were amazing from beginning to end and I can honestly say it was the easiest path to an astounding result that I’ve ever been lucky enough to tread.”

The musicians on the album will join Craig and Charlie on the road too: Stevie Christie on keyboards; Garry John Kane on bass; Zac Ware on electric guitar and Clive Jenner on drums.

The Proclaimers completed a two-year world tour late in 2013, a year that also saw the film release of the Scottish musical drama Sunshine On Leith with its soundtrack of cast versions of the Reid brothers’ stirring songs.

Craig and Charlie took a year out in 2014 to focus on songwriting before heading to the studio in December to record such numbers as What School?, Forever Young, Ten Tiny Fingers, Rainbows & Happy Regrets and Moral Compass.

Tickets for Hull can be booked on 01482 300300; York, 0844 854 2757 or yorkbarbican.co.uk. Let’s Hear It For The Dogs will be available through Cooking Vinyl from Monday.
