PRESS readers with a keen eye for what makes a good building are being invited to the launch of this year's York Design Awards.

Each year, the awards aim to recognise the very best building design in a city famed for its architecture.

Winners last year included The Star Inn The City and - in the prestigious Press People's Award voted for by Press readers - the landscaping at Derwenthorpe.

This year's search for the best new building in the city - along with awards for conservation and open space projects - will be launched at St Peter's School on Tuesday.

David Rudlin, one of the UK's leading architects and urban designers and the man behind plans to expand several UK towns with 'garden city' extensions, will give a talk about how a city like York can continue to grow without losing its character.

“With York’s ongoing and often contentious Local Plan consultation, David Rudlin’s ideas on how historic cities could successfully grow and flourish in the future should provoke interesting debate amongst members of the city’s building and development community in attendance," said Design Awards chair Janet Hopton.

"What better way to get the 2015 York Design Awards open for entries?”

In recognition of Press readers important contribution each year in choosing the winner of the Press People's Award, several places for Tuesday's launch have been reserved exclusively for Press readers.

Places are limited, however. so if you'd like to be there, make sure you email your application in by Monday morning.

Simply email reception@yorksciencepark.co.uk marking your email "YDA Press reader request'.

Then event will be held in the Memorial hall at St Peter's School from 6-9pm on Tuesday February 3.
