Cigarette packaging vote

CITY of York Council has welcomed a move to make cigarette packaging plain.

MPs could be asked to vote on regulations on standardised packaging for cigarettes and other tobacco products before May’s general election.

Councillor Linsay Cunningham said: “There are still 28,888 people who smoke in York. The sooner we see the introduction of standardised packaging the fewer people will start smoking in York and this will be a step in the right direction to reduce the number of smokers in York.

“It is a priority for York to reduce the prevalence of adult smoking which is currently rising and reduce the number of young people starting. The move to plain packaging will make cigarettes less attractive to young people and help prevent children and young people taking up smoking.”

For help to quit smoking telephone 0300 303 1603.
