A SPECIAL roadshow is coming to York's Castle Museum to tell the city's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history.

Curators at the museum and archivists at York Explore are holding the Bringing History out of the Closet event on February 7 as part of national LGBT History Month.

They hope many different groups will come along to talk about their experiences, achievements and challenges, as well as looking at the history of gay and civil rights movements in York.

They are encouraging those attending to bring along relevant objects which help illustrate their stories.

Philip Newton, assistant curator of history, said the event was being held in a bid to record an area of York’s rich past which was often overlooked.

“We hope a wide range of people will come forward to share their thoughts and opinions so we can learn more about this part of the city’s past and uncover stories which previously may have been hidden or ignored," he said.

The event takes place between 1pm and 4pm in Kirk’s Room and is free to attend.
