SECRET plans have been revealed to exhume the corpse of Jimmy Savile from its concrete tomb.

The two-day operation was planned following complaints from families of loved ones buried in the graveyard. A contingency plan had been agreed with the Savile family to dig up the body but the charities the DJ left his fortune to said “no” because of the cost.

Now campaigners calling for Savile’s corpse to be dug up hope money will still be left from his estate to meet the £20,000 bill for the exhumation.

When undertakers removed Savile’s gaudy £4,000 triple gravestone from Scarborough cemetery in 2012 the work began after midnight and was completed by the early hours. But chipping the corpse out of the tomb raider-proof final resting place will involve closing the graveyard for a day, a night, and another day.

The six-foot wide triple plot had been filled to the brim with two-and- a-half tonnes of reinforced concrete with steel bars also inserted to bind the mix together.

The family was not comfortable with Savile’s body remaining in the cemetery following calls by Scarborough Councillor Colin Haddington for it to be dug up and cremated.

The church had also made clear that ecclesiastical consent would not be a problem. But the trustees of the Jimmy Savile Charitable Trust were not happy. The charity drew the line at an exhumation, which bosses regarded as “a luxury” because the cash was supposed to be going to good causes, sources revealed.

Cllr Haddington said: “The undertakers visited the family and the family agreed to the exhumation plan. But then the trust refused to release any money to pay for it.

“That was disappointing because the Savile family felt it was a good idea to appease the relatives who had complained to me. I can understand the trust wanting to use the money to pay compensation to the victims. But it is just as important for the families who have loved ones buried there. As times move on some will forget – but others will not.

“Jimmy Savile will be on their minds every time they lay flowers no matter how long it goes on. If someone comes up with the money the plans are still there and ready to go. It would be nice to think if there was anything left over from the estate it would be enough to do it.”
