TWO water mains have burst in the Clifton area of York, sending water flooding down nearby streets.

Yorkshire Water said the mains in Crichton Avenue burst earlier today.

"We currently have a team on site looking to resolve the situation and unfortunately our repairs will impact on traffic in the area today.," he said.

"We'd like to apologise to any customers affected by a loss of supply and motorists that are affected by our repair work."

Linda Vaughan, of nearby Bede Avenue, said the bursts happened between 6.30 am and 6.45 am.

"I looked out of the window and it was coming down the road like a river," she said. "It was three or four inches deep and going into people's driveways and gardens."
