JORVIK Gilbert and Sullivan Company will start rehearsals on Monday for their spring production of Cox & Box and a selection of G & S favourites.

Auditions for principal parts in Cox & Box and solo roles in the selection were held in November, but there are no auditions required for those wishing to join as chorus members. Instead, they are welcome simply to join the Monday evening rehearsals at Huntington Methodist Church, held weekly at 7.30pm.

Cox & Box and co will be staged at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York on Saturday, April 11 at 7.30pm. Adapted from John Madison Morton's farce Box And Cox, it marked Sir Arthur Sullivan’s first foray into comic opera with its comical tale of two lodgers, one bedroom, one unexpected meeting.

Sergeant Bouncer, an old soldier, has a scheme to acquire double rent from a single room. By day, he lets it to Mr Box, a printer who is out all night, and by night to Mr Cox, a

hatter who works all day. His plan works well until Mr Cox is, unexpectedly, given a day's holiday and the two lodgers meet, duly discovering that they share more than the same bed.

Last year, Jorvik G&S presented The Gondoliers and Iolanthe at the Jo RoTheatre, and York's only amateur theatre company dedicated solely to performing the works of Gilbert and Sullivan will return there in September to perform a fully-staged production of The Sorcerer. Rehearsals will begin after Easter.
