YORK has had its status as a Fairtrade city has been renewed, in recognition of its support of the Fairtrade movement.

A new certificate confirming that York is still an official Fairtrade city was presented at the city council#s West Offices on Thursday, December 18.

The city has been recognised for its Fairtrade markets as well as the number of Fairtrade shops and cafes across the city, far and above the number required to receive the accreditation.

Kathryn Tissiman, chairman of the York Fairtrade Forum, said: "York Fairtrade Forum campaigns for a fairer, just and sustainable, corporate control trade system and what better way to do this than in our own lovely city.

"Fairtrade enables people to trade their way out of poverty and gives them visibility in the global supply chain and we are very proud that York is playing a real role in this. We want our citizens and visitors alike to know that York is a Fairtrade City and we invite everyone to join us in promoting our vision for a fairer world."

The certificate also recognises the efforts of City of York Council who encourage catering outlets on council property to stock Fairtrade goods.

Council buildings which sell Fairtrade items include Library Learning Centres York Explore and Acomb Explore as well as Energise.

Cllr Linsay Cunningham-Cross, Cabinet Member for Health and Community Engagement, received the certificate along with MsTissiman. She added: "York is proud to be a Fairtrade city. It is great that as a city we can give the message that we support fairness and a fair day's wage for everyone no matter where they work.

"I would like to thank businesses across the city that have helped this accreditation be renewed by continuing to support Fairtrade in the city as well as the hard work of the city?s Fairtrade forum."
