A PETITION calling for the upgrading of the A1079 between York and Hull has been presented to the Government, after receiving more than 400 signatures.

The document, launched by MPs representing the East Riding of Yorkshire, calls for a formal response on a range of safety improvements.

The petition, which was run online, attracted support from 424 people.

The campaign has been spearheaded by Greg Knight, MP for East Yorkshire, and Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, who have long argued for the Government to take into account the safety and economic issues of failing to improve the road.

One of the signatories, Don Griffiths, wrote: "The junction into Wilberfoss from York is a serious problem for motorists trying to join the road going into York due to poor visibility.

"This could easily be rectified by widening the exit road off the A1079; there is sufficient room. This would have the effect of moving cars further over and giving cars waiting at the junction visibility behind the oncoming car."

Another, Michelle Dunn, wrote: "It is outrageous that a major route between a ferry port and a big tourist draw like York is in such an outdate state. Look at the continent to see what roads should be like."

Paul Whitworth, said: "The A1079 is a major route into York and the only route signposted to the North when leaving Hull docks.

"It is a major queuing area during the rush hour and there are many accidents.

"I sometimes have to cross the A1079 from one side of the road to another with a bus load of school kids and it worries me every time.

"This road should be dual carriageway all the way from Hull docks to the York bypass, with sensible junctions at each village."

Mr Stuart said: "Ministers have said that they will consider schemes to improve the A1079 if and when they are proposed.

"The petition will show them that there is popular support for an upgrade.

"With the support of the East Riding Council, I am confident that we can build a strong case for a modern, updated A1079. People have been struggling with the A1079 for too long."

The Action Access A1079 group is calling for the road to be dualled along its length, combined with better junctions at key market towns such as Pocklington and Market Weighton.
